Dry Oar Site Plan - Revisted

Destyni Prairie

WDD 130-05

Overview

Purpose

The Dry Oar website we were tasked to build is simple and visually appealing. But is it current? As a web design student, I keep up to date with modern design practices. For my final project, I want to redesign the Dry Oar website and logo that I built this semester. My plan will incorporate the same general content and pages as the existing website, but utilize contemporary techniques, such as full screen images, interactive CSS, and embedded videos, to bring the design up to speed as both professional and competitive. This will be a great standout piece for my portfolio, showing what I can do with an existing website.

Audience

My audience is Dry Oar customers: rafters of all ages and walks of life. Their top customers tend to be families on vacation, tourists, and companies organizing get-away excursions for their employees / students. The new web design will need to be visually appealing, modern, and user-friendly.

Branding

Website Logo

The original logo I used from resources provided is as follows:

Logo image

However, as part of my project, I will be redesigning the logo for more recognizable branding. The company is called "Dry Oar", after all, and that name is not currently on the logo. I will update this section when I have finished designing the new logo.

Typography

Heading Font: Sonder Slab

Sonder Slab is a high-impact font that makes a statement, so it is great for headlines. It's got a rough-around-the-edges outdoorsy sort of feel that I think will help create the right atmosphere for a whitewater rafting company website. As this is a font I selected from Behance instead of Google's library, I also added Bebas Neue as a fallback font, just in case it fails to show for whatever reason. Bebas Neue doesn't have slabs, but it's still a strong font that packs the punch I want to see in these headlines.

Paragraph Font: Nunito

Complimentary contrast is what you want to see in good typography. Nunito is easy to read, but a lot more subtle than my chosen heading font. The glyphs exhibit attractive curves and points, as opposed to the blocky slabs of Sonder.

Normal paragraph example

The best Whitewater Rafting in Colorado, White Water Rafting Company offers rafting on the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers in Glenwood Springs. Since 1974, we have been family owned and operated, rafting the Shoshone section of Glenwood Canyon and beyond.

Colored paragraph example

Trips vary from mild and great for families, to trips exclusively for physically fit and experienced rafters. No matter what type of river adventures you are seeking, White Water Rafting Company can make it happen for you.

We Run Rivers to Relax

We believe that there is nothing like a river trip for relaxing. That is why we subscribe to the dry oar philosophy of boating. Keeping your oars dry for us means taking time to look around and notice the beauty that surrounds the rivers we love.

We Run Whitewater For The Rush!

That doesn't mean we don't also like rapids. Opposites in all things after all. We believe that that tenseness that comes when you are looking down the tongue of a big string of waves makes you appreciate the calm beautiful water that always follows even more.

Come Run With Us

We invite you to come relax with us on one of the amazing rivers we visit. Check out our trips and let us know which one best suits you. We're waiting to hear from you!

About

Who We Are

We are a whitewater rafting company located in the heart of scenic Colorado. Back in 2010, our founders, brothers Jack and Collin West, were just two guys pushing pencils in the office. We were like caged wild animals, and when jack suffered a major anxiety attack, we knew things had to change. That's why we founded Dry Oar, to give others the same outlet that proved a lifesaver for Jack: unique, custom whitewater experiences to get away from it all and really connect with nature.

Our Services

We provide gear and tour guides for customizable river experiences. Want a wild, whitewater experience down the Buena Vista? We've got you. Prefer a calming scenic tour on the Dolores? Consider it done. Please see the graph below for open tour dates and more information on the gear we provide.

The Area

Colorado is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. It encompasses most of the Southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. The region has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 13,000 years, with the Lindenmeier Site containing artifacts dating from approximately 9200 BCE to 1000 BCE; the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains was a major migration route for early peoples who spread throughout the Americas. The word "Colorado" comes from the Spanish word for "colored red." (source: Wikipedia) To learn more about the rivers we patronize, check out our Rivers Page!

Our Rivers

Arkansas River

The Arkansas River is a major tributary of the Mississippi River. It generally flows to the east and southeast as it traverses the U.S. states of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The river's source basin lies in the western United States in Colorado, specifically the Arkansas River Valley. The headwaters derive from the snowpack in the Sawatch and Mosquito mountain ranges. It flows east into the Midwest via Kansas, and finally into the South through Oklahoma and Arkansas.

At 1,469 miles, it is the sixth-longest river in the United States, the second-longest tributary in the Mississippi–Missouri system, and the 45th longest river in the world. Its origin is in the Rocky Mountains in Lake County, Colorado, near Leadville. In 1859, placer gold discovered in the Leadville area brought thousands seeking to strike it rich! (source: Wikipedia)

Dolores River

The Dolores River rises in a meadow called Tin Can Basin, near 12,520-foot Hermosa Peak in the San Miguel Mountains, in Dolores County, Colorado. The headwaters are located about 5 miles south of Lizard Head Pass in the San Juan National Forest. The river flows southwest in a canyon past Rico, receiving the West Dolores River, then flows into McPhee Reservoir near Dolores in Montezuma County. Formed by McPhee Dam, the reservoir is about 10 miles long and diverts flows of the upper Dolores River for irrigation. (source: Wikipedia)

Clear Creek

Clear Creek is a tributary of the South Platte River, approximately 66 miles long, in north central Colorado in the United States. The creek flows through Clear Creek Canyon in the Rocky Mountains directly west of Denver, descending through a long gorge to emerge at the town of Golden, finally ending in the Colorado Eastern Plains where it joins the South Platte. The creek is famous as the location of the most intense early mining activity during the Colorado Gold Rush of 1859. Mountain man Jim Baker had a cabin on the creek from 1873 until his death in 1898. The creek provided the route of the Colorado Central Railroad, and later for U.S. Highway 6 and Interstate 70 as they ascend to the Continental Divide west of Denver. (source: Wikipedia)

Poudre River

The name of the river (French for "Hide the Powder") is a corruption of the original Cache à la Poudre, or "cache of powder". It refers to an incident in the 1820s when French trappers, caught by a snowstorm, were forced to bury part of their gunpowder along the banks of the river. Its headwaters are in the Front Range in Larimer County, in the northern part of Rocky Mountain National Park. The main source is Poudre Lake. The river de scends eastward in the mountains through the Roosevelt National Forest in Poudre Canyon. It emerges from the foothills north of the city of Fort Collins. It flows eastward across the plains, passing north of the city of Greeley, and flows into the South Platte River approximately 5 miles east of Greeley. (source: Wikipedia)
